I think what i found most surprising on my drifts is that once I got started a three hour walk just flew by. During each drift I was very apprehensive about the material I preselected to focus (base on my drift strategy) but once I was out in the field my concerns just seemed to fade away as I focused on just collecting as much material as I could.
During drift 2 I decided to work exclusively with still images and when I moved on to drift 3 I decided to remove the stills and work with only video clips. I found it much harder to find engaging video than stills. After reviewing my material I wish I would have continued to work with stills as it turned out adding sound to video was just as difficult as it would have been if I had used only stills.
The last thing that surprised me about the drifts is that more freedom actually hindered my ability to create a final product. I found I constantly wanted to change my strategy (up until the very last minute) and in some cases collecting footage that went against my strategy just in case when I got back I didn't like my footage. I think the class would have been more successful as an exercise in working with sound, stills, video and the combinations if I was limited to footage I myself did not capture. It seems the less freedom I have the more likely I am to spend focused on actually assembling/editing my piece than I would worrying about having "good"/useable footage.
